Seth Jones will miss the start of the regular season.
The Blue Jackets announced Wednesday that the defenseman will miss four to six weeks with a second-degree MCL sprain suffered in Tuesday’s preseason win over the Sabres.
According to the Columbus Dispatch, coach John Tortorella said of Jones in a radio interview earlier in the day, “it’s going to be a little while for him.”
Jones was hurt during the second period of Tuesday’s game and did not skate during the third period.
The 23-year-old is coming off a productive 2017-18 season in which his 57 points set a franchise record for a defenseman. His 16 goals also tied Zach Werenski for the club record for a defenseman.
Columbus has two preseason games remaining against the Penguins and Blackhawks, respectively, before opening the regular season Oct. 4 in Detroit.
