NFL free agency news: Bills sign QB Matt Barkley

NFL free agency rumors: Bills to meet with QB Matt Barkley

The Bills have added a quarterback.

Buffalo signed free agent Matt Barkley, the team announced Thursday. The 28-year-old signal-caller last appeared in an NFL game in 2016.

The Bills also announced that they signed punter Colton Schmidt and placed punter Corey Bojorquez (shoulder) and running back Taiwan Jones (neck) on injured reserve.

Barkley likely will serve as the Bills’ backup quarterback Sunday against the Bears. Nathan Peterman is expected to start against Chicago. He has registered one touchdown and four interceptions in three appearances this season.

Buffalo rookie quarterback Josh Allen has been sidelined with an elbow injury, and veteran Derek Anderson reportedly suffered a concussion in the team’s 25-6 Week 8 loss to the Patriots.

Barkley originally was selected by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. He has thrown eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 11 career games with the Eagles and Bears.

He had been with the Bengals earlier in 2018 but was released in mid-September.
