Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin says he has hit 'rock bottom'

Bills wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin made headlines with his criticism of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton before regular season play and he has failed to produce in Buffalo. He said the former NFL MVP was inaccurate, and that his performance was being hampered by Newton.

Benjamin felt that a new environment would help him show what he’s really capable of, but this has easily been his worst season statistically. Benjamin openly acknowledges that he has room for improvement.

“It’s definitely going to be a fresh start,” Benjamin told The Athletic . “Like I said, man, once I find a team or if I’m still here in Buffalo, wherever, man. I’m going to keep pushing. I learned a lot about myself. Just keep going. The mentality is to just keep pushing. Once you hit rock bottom, I guess it’s only up from there.”

The Bills have had one of the worst quarterback situations in the NFL this season, so it’s been hard for any of their receivers to put up gaudy numbers. Benjamin has recorded 20 receptions for 302 yards and one touchdown through 10 games, which ranks him behind only Zay Jones within Buffalo’s receiving corps. His reported inability to cut weight in Carolina made him ineffective last season, and his work ethic has also been under fire.

Benjamin seems to already be doubting his future in Buffalo. His nine-touchdown rookie year is far behind him, and he needs to re-establish himself as a legitimate threat.

Josh Allen looks set to re-claim the starting quarterback spot from Matt Barkley this Sunday, despite the team’s overwhelming 41-10 victory over the Jets last week. Benjamin has six games left to build some essence of chemistry, so he’ll need to make the most of any opportunity he has left.
