Maple Leafs C Auston Matthews tallies goal, assist in first period after return from injury

Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews picked up right where he left off in his return from a shoulder injury Wednesday.

Within five minutes of the first period, Matthews tallied an assist on a power-play goal by John Tavares.

Then, some eight minutes later, Matthews put one in the back of the net on yet another power play, this time on assists from Morgan Rielly and Mitch Marner.

Both of these points come against a Sharks team that led the NHL on penalty kills entering Wednesday’s game.

But Matthews has been hot all season and even coming back from an injury he looked good.

The goal was the 21-year-old player’s 11th of the season and the assist was his seventh. This in just 12 games.

This is his first game back since going out with a shoulder injury Oct. 27.

The Maple Leafs added another goal to close out the first period when Tavares scored his second of the night.
