The NFL (aka the “No Fun League” in some circles) can display a sense of humor at the most unexpected times.
Case in point: The NFL announced Saturday it has fined Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas $30,000 for pulling a cellphone out of a Mercedes-Benz Superdome goal post after a touchdown last Sunday against the Rams.
Thomas’s celebration paid tribute to a similar celebration by former Saints receiver Joe Horn in a 2003 game against the Giants.
The NFL fined Horn $30,000 for that stunt. Indexed for inflation, Thomas should have been fined more than $41,000.
He can appeal the fine.
Interestingly enough, the NFL did not levy the fine for unsportsmanlike conduct — Thomas drew a flag for that in the game — but “for using the phone as a prop and having a mobile device in the bench area.”
