Michael Thomas fined $30K for cellphone celebration, matching Joe Horn's fine

Michael Thomas impersonates former Saints great Joe Horn with cellphone TD celebration

The NFL (aka the “No Fun League” in some circles) can display a sense of humor at the most unexpected times.

Case in point: The NFL announced Saturday it has fined Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas $30,000 for pulling a cellphone out of a Mercedes-Benz Superdome goal post after a touchdown last Sunday against the Rams.

Thomas’s celebration paid tribute to a similar celebration by former Saints receiver Joe Horn in a 2003 game against the Giants.

The NFL fined Horn $30,000 for that stunt. Indexed for inflation, Thomas should have been fined more than $41,000.

He can appeal the fine.

Interestingly enough, the NFL did not levy the fine for unsportsmanlike conduct — Thomas drew a flag for that in the game — but “for using the phone as a prop and having a mobile device in the bench area.”

In case you missed Thomas’s “phone call” the first time around:

And here’s a look back at Horn’s original stunt:
