The Spurs have had an unfortunate string of injuries this season, and Gregg Popovich recently revealed the status of Pau Gasol. According to the San Antonio Express-News, Gasol is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his left foot.
There is no definitive timetable for his return.
The Spurs are 10-10 through 20 games, and Gasol has played in nine contests so far. He’s averaging 6.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists. His scoring and rebounding numbers are career lows. The 38-year-old Spaniard is a six-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA champion. He’s never averaged less than 10 points in his 19 NBA seasons.
Gasol will likely be exiting the NBA soon, and he’ll lose some valuable opportunities to gel with his teammates in this transformative year for the Spurs. The team lost Manu Ginobili to retirement and watched Tony Parker join the Hornets this season. Their heir to the point guard throne Dejounte Murray tore his ACL before the year, and their star shooting guard prospect Lonnie Walker suffered a meniscus tear in the preseason.
The Western Conference is just as talented as it’s always been, so San Antonio will have to establish a new identity to remain competitive.
