Bruins center David Backes has been suspended three games by the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Devils center Blake Coleman in New Jersey’s 5-2 win over Boston on Thursday.

“It is important to note that the head is the main point of contact on this hit,” the NHL Player Safety video noted on Friday. “While Backes does graze Coleman’s shoulder on his way to making contact with Coleman’s head, the brunt of the contact on this hit is delivered to Coleman’s head.”
The video went on to detail that the contact on the head was avoidable.
The incident occurred in the third period of Thursday’s game.
Backes has three goals and seven assists this season. Boston is fourth in the Atlantic Division with a 20-14-4 record.
