NBA trade rumors: Mavericks will eventually move Dennis Smith Jr., league executives believe

The Mavericks may eventually decide to deal Dennis Smith Jr.

Dallas says it isn’t shopping the second-year guard, according to a report from The New York Times’ Marc Stein. But, “the expectation among many executives” is that the team will move Smith at some point because of the emergence of rookie Luka Doncic, the report says.

There’s “skepticism” around the league that Smith, who has been out since Dec. 13 with a wrist injury, will be able to develop into an off-the-ball threat playing next to Doncic, according to the report.

The Mavericks selected Smith out of North Carolina State with the ninth pick in the 2017 draft. He’s averaging 13 points and four assists in 28.4 minutes per game this season.

Doncic has turned into a star in his first NBA season. The 19-year-old guard is tallying 19 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in 2018-19.

The Mavericks will face the Pelicans on Wednesday. They’ll enter that matchup with a 15-17 record.
