According to earlier reports, Williams was the man the Jets wanted to run the team’s defense no matter who was hired as head coach. New York officially announced Adam Gase as the team’s head man this week.
Williams was not retained as the head coach of the Browns despite leading the team to a 5-3 record after being given the interim title during the 2018 season when Hue Jackson was fired.
He was the defensive coordinator before and has served the same role with the Rams, Saints, Jaguars, Redskins, Oilers and Titans.
He also went 17-31 as the head coach of the Bills from 2001-03.
Williams is known for running a base 4-3 defense, and the Jets ran a 3-4 under former head coach Todd Bowles, so the team will have to go through a transition on that side of the ball under Williams.
