News of an NFL player getting a tattoo isn’t a big deal, but Cam Newton’s first tattoo created a buzz for a rather unique reason.
On Tuesday, New York-based Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy posted an Instagram photo of him sitting with Newton commemorating the occasion.
While McCurdy didn’t reveal what Newton got — the photo shows his right arm bandaged — he did state it was Newton’s first tattoo.
Why is Newton getting a tattoo a big deal? According to several reports published when Newton was first drafted by the Panthers, then-owner Jerry Richardson discouraged Newton from getting tattoos or piercings.
Richardson addressed the clean-cut image he wanted Newton to maintain on “The Charlie Rose Show“, where Richardson recalled asking Newton if he had any body piercings or tattoos. When Newton told him he didn’t, Richardson said: “We want to keep it that way.”
Richardson also was adamant Newton kept his hair shorter, but this past year he has started to grow it out.
Despite the scrutiny, Newton took to his Instagram story to dispel that Richardson banned him from getting tattoos.

“Big lies! He never said I could not get a tattoo or grow my hair; I was free to do whatever I wanted to do! I should have said something the first time this came out years ago, but I cannot let this fly this time!” Newton posted.
As to what the tattoo actually is, that remains to be seen.
