Patrick Mahomes is under contract for three more years with the Kansas City Chiefs, but the team is already looking to give him an extension.
And the result could be the first $200 million contract in NFL history.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that league sources say the Chiefs will look to sign the second-year quarterback to an extension next season, when he becomes eligible for a new contract.
Schefter said league sources expect Mahomes “could land the NFL’s first $200 million contract.”
A contract in that range would shatter the previous most lucrative NFL salary package, the five-year, $150 million deal Matt Ryan signed with the Falcons in May 2018. In August, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers signed a four-year, $134 million contract that could be worth up to $180 million with incentives and bonuses. That deal includes a record $100 million in guaranteed money.
Mahomes is currently under his rookie contract for two more seasons, with the Chiefs holding a fifth-year option. The team definitely got its money’s worth this season, as the 23-year-old star racked up more than 5,000 passing yards and 50 touchdowns, for a salary of $4.1 million.
