Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says criticism of OC Brian Schottenheimer is “garbage”

The Seahawks’ 24-22 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday opened the team’s offensive game plan to heavy criticism.

Seattle relied heavily on the run game despite Dallas shutting it down. This sparked harsh criticism of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Carroll addressed that criticism Monday in a radio appearance on 710 ESPN in Seattle.

“That’s a bunch of garbage,” Carroll said. “What a terrific football season we had. This was the second-highest scoring team in the history of the franchise I think — c’mon, and we outran everybody and we did not turn the ball over. We almost set an all-time NFL record for fewest turnovers in a season.

“That’s discipline and tactics and approach and all that. I get it, everybody feels bad about it. Brian’s a helluva coach and he does a great job and he did a great job with our guys throughout the season and will continue to.”

Seattle, which averaged an NFL-leading 4.8 yards per carry in the regular season, ran 24 times for only 73 yards against the Cowboys, their lowest output since their Week 12 victory over the Panthers (75 yards). Meanwhile, quarterback Russell Wilson hit several big plays when he looked deep.

Carroll, who suffered his first wild-card loss at Seattle’s helm, didn’t disagree with trying to get out of the run-run-pass approach the team took at AT&T Stadium.

“I don’t disagree with that, I wish we would’ve done something different too,” he said. “If you guys don’t look at it like we look at it, maybe you do, go back at the series.”

Even Wilson thought they could have passed more, but still emphasized the importance of getting the run game going. He compared Saturday’s loss to the team’s game in Carolina.

“I think we could have kept doing that some more,” he said Sunday, via The News Tribune. “But also, you want to stay true to running the ball, too. So, I think that, like I said, this game was kind of similar to the Carolina game I felt like a little bit.

“If we could have done that a little bit more maybe earlier. But I think also too, we could have been better. We could have been better on some of the runs and some of the things we were doing. That’s part of the game. Sometimes you shoot, sometimes it doesn’t go in. Sometimes you shoot and it keeps going in.”
