Trae Young thinks he’s the best rookie in the NBA.
This season’s crop of first-year players has been impressive, but the Hawks guard told Yahoo Sports he’s “the best one in it.”
Young has been mentioned alongside the Mavericks’ Luka Doncic as one of the league’s most promising future stars, but he wants top billing.
“Yeah,” Young said when asked if he should win Rookie of the Year. “It’s respect. Luka’s had a really good year. Deandre (Ayton) even had a really good year. Jaren Jackson Jr., before he got injured, had a really good year. This rookie class is deep, but at the same time, I feel like I’m the best one in it.”
Young has played well in 2018-19 and has won all but one of the season’s Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month awards. December’s honor went to New York’s Kevin Knox.
“I feel like I should have got (December), too,” Young said. “I should have got it that month, too. It’s all good.”
Young has had an uptick in production lately, as he enters Tuesday’s matchup against the Rockets averaging 25.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game since the All-Star break.
Doncic still appears to be the favorite to take home the hardware at the end of the season. But Atlanta’s rising star hasn’t given up.
“For me, I want to be the best and if being the Rookie of the Year and getting the hardware is going to determine if I’m the best rookie in my class, of course I want to win it,” Young said. “I still believe there is time. I think my month of November, the way I played, the shooting, really hurt me this year.
“Looking back at it, if I could do it over again, I would and just play the way I am now. But I think I had to go through that to be where I’m at now. I still think there’s time left.”
