Ravens cut safety Eric Weddle, report says

The Ravens and free safety Eric Weddle have parted ways.

According to a report from the NFL Network, Baltimore has cut the veteran defensive leader.

Weddle, 34, would have received a $6.5 million base salary in 2019, a number that appeared to be too high for new general manager Eric DeCosta.

“If he wants me back, I’m here,” Weddle said in Janurary. “If not, it’s all good. I understand it, and I’ll just ride off in the sunset.

“If they want to go in a different direction, I’m not going to go play for another team. It’s not where I’m at in my career. It’s either play my last year here and that will be it and enjoy it, or this has been it. It’s pretty simple. I’m a simple kind of guy.”

Weddle has earned three of his six Pro Bowl selections during his time with the Ravens and was a key factor on the NFL’s top-ranked defense in 2018.

Weddle finished third on the team in tackles (68) but did not tally an interception last season.

He came to Baltimore after leading the Chargers in tackles five of his nine seasons with the team.
