Sabres center Jack Eichel has been suspended two games for his illegal head check on Avalanche forward Carl Soderberg in Saturday’s game, the NHL announced Sunday.
“This hit does not meet any of the criteria for unavoidable head contact …,” the league announced in a video showing a replay of the check. “The issue on this play is Eichel’s angle of approach, which picked Soderberg’s head and makes it the main point of contact.”
Soderberg hit the ice hard after the check but quickly got to his feet and skated to the bench. Eichel earned a 2-minute penalty.
The Avalanche beat the Sabres, 3-0.
Eichel, a two-time All-Star, leads Buffalo in scoring this season with 72 points (25 goals).
