The Bruins will have captain Zdeno Chara back for at least one more season.
Boston and the defenseman have agreed on a contract extension that will keep him with the Bruins through the 2019-20 season. The deal is worth $2 million, plus an additional $1.75 million in performance-based incentives, the team announced Saturday.

The second-oldest active player in the NHL at 42 years old, Chara is in his 21st season with the league and his 13th with the Bruins after signing with the franchise in 2006. He has helped Boston make the postseason nine times with a 10th trip a mere formality. Boston is in second place in the Atlantic Division with 99 points and can clinch a spot in the playoffs with a win Saturday in Florida against the Panthers.
Chara has appeared in 55 of the team’s 74 games this season, posting four goals and seven assists. He is plus-16.

Chara ranks sixth in franchise history in games played (948), and fourth in points by a defenseman (452). He’s behind only Ray Bourque (1,506), Bobby Orr (888), and Dit Clapper (474).
