Jaguars' Doug Marrone couldn't contact Jalen Ramsey because he had wrong number

Jaguars shut down Jalen Ramsey trade rumors

Things in Jacksonville might have been a little more dramatic than they needed to be.

Last week, when coach Doug Marrone told reporters he was unable to get a hold of Jalen Ramsey who was not in attendance for voluntary workouts, it caused a stir. But Monday, it became clear as to why to two had trouble connecting — Marrone didn’t actually have Ramsey’s phone number.

“I couldn’t figure out what was going on, so we kind of had a little laugh about it,” Marrone told reporters, via “Now I have the right number. He’s always had my number, so it’s good.”

It got very dramatic during the Jaguars’ voluntary workout period last week when Ramsey and Telvin Smith were not in attendance. Jacksonville front office chief Tom Coughlin was vocal in the media about the men needing to be there.

″We’re very close to 100% attendance, and quite frankly, all our players should be here,” Coughlin said. ″Building the concept of team, working hard side-by-side, constructing our bond of togetherness, formulating our collective priorities and goals.

″Success in the NFL demands struggle. Those who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish and insensitive to the real values of team. The hard work that many try to avoid is the major building block for the development of an outstanding football team.”

Ramsey’s agent responded by saying the defensive back was spending time with his family and working out on his own.

“He’s spending time with his young daughter & family while training in his hometown of Nashville,” David Mulugheta wrote on Twitter. “In addition the Jags are fully aware of why he is not taking part in the voluntary off season program.”

Marrone said he has spoken to Ramsey now and things appear to be on their way to being smoothed over.

“We had a great talk,″ Marrone said. ″He is training with his brother (at home in Tennessee). He’s spending time with his family and he says he’s going to come back in the best shape that he’s ever been in and he’s all fired up. That was pretty much the conversation. It was a good conversation.″

Marrone has not yet been able to get into contact with Smith. It is unclear if he has his correct telephone number.
