Matt Calvert’s game-winning assist proved costly for the Avalanche in the long run.
The Colorado winger is out for Game 3 on Tuesday, coach Jared Bednar told reporters.
Calvert suffered the injury as he dished out the game-winning assist in Game 2 when he took a shot from Sharks defenseman Brent Burns.
Bednar confirmed it was that big hit that Calvert took in Game 2 that knocked him out of the lineup.

The play happened when Calvert got control of the puck on a breakaway and just got rid of it to a streaking Nathan MacKinnon up the ice.
Calvert took the hit from Burns right after he released the puck but MacKinnon went on to score an empty-netter to make it 4-2.
San Jose added a goal in the waning moments to cut the lead to 4-3 which made MacKinnon’s goal the difference.
It is unclear what injury Calvert exactly sustained on the play though it appeared he hit the back of his head on the ice after taking the shot from Burns.
Calvert had 11 goals and 15 assists this season for Colorado and has three assists through seven playoff games.
Game 3 is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. ET Tuesday in Colorado.
