NHL playoffs 2019: Maple Leafs' Nazem Kadri suspended for remainder of first round

Nazem Kadri has been suspended for the rest of the Maple Leafs’ first-round series against the Bruins, the NHL announced Monday.

The suspension stems from Kadri’s cross-check on Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk in the Maple Leafs’ 4-1 Game 2 loss Saturday. The league found the hit was “not a hockey play.”

“Instead, this is a player retaliating against an opponent by using his stick as a weapon to make forceful and direct head contact,” the NHL said. “While we understand Kadri took offense to DeBrusk’s hit against Marleau, players are not allowed to simply violate league playing rules because they feel the retribution is justified.”

Kadri was also suspended for three games in last year’s Stanley Cup playoffs when he boarded Bruins winger Tommy Wingels.

The Maple Leafs’ loss Saturday moved them into a 1-1 tie in the series with Boston as they will shift back to Toronto for Games 3 and 4.
