Texas Tech defensive lineman injured in shooting near campus apartments

Texas Tech redshirt freshman defensive lineman John Scott III was injured in a shooting near a student apartment complex in Lubbock on Saturday.

The school released a statement acknowledging Scott was injured along with one other person, but it did not release the extent of any injuries.

“(The athletics department) was made aware of an unfortunate incident this afternoon involving … freshman defensive lineman John Scott III, who remains hospitalized at UMC,” the statement read, via the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”

Two individuals were reportedly injured in the incident at Park East Student Living Apartments around approximately 6:10 p.m. CT. One was seriously hurt. The gunman is still at large.

Scott is a 6-3, 275-pound redshirt freshman out of Hitchcock, Texas. He was a three-star recruit coming out of high school, according to 247 Sports, and did not play in his first year with the program.
