Warriors' Draymond Green explains why he lost 23 pounds in 6 weeks

Warriors forward Draymond Green revealed he was told he needed to get in shape to help Golden State make another postseason run for the title.

Green detailed a conversation he had with Warriors general manager Bob Myers when his health was discussed after the All-Star break. Green retold the exchange after the Warriors’ Game 3 win over the Clippers earlier this week.

“Draymond, I’ma tell you something you may not want to hear,” Green recalled Myers telling him heading into March, according to The Athletic. “If we’re going to win a championship, you’ve got to get in shape.”

Green, however, already had a plan in place to get in shape. He explained his whole regimen to Myers, including using a nutritionist to help with his diet and a chef to make his meals. The Athletic notes the strength and conditioning team also had a strategy to help him drop weight while still keeping his strength.

“Yeah, I start this strenuous regimen on March 6,” Green said he told Myers. “It’ll take me like two weeks, maybe like 10 days, to really get to where I need to be.”

Green explained he knew it was time to get back in shape and ready for the playoffs. Green, listed as 6-7 and 230 pounds on Golden State’s official website, has lost 23 pounds in six weeks, according to The Athletic.

“I knew I wasn’t in good shape,” Green said. “But I also know if anybody knows how to get in shape and get in shape quick, I know how. I’ve been doing it all my life.”

Green’s strategy appears to have already paid off. He has averaged 8.2 points on 46.5 percent shooting while also recording 7.1 rebounds per game since March 6, which increased his points per game average to 7.4.

Green, playing in his seventh postseason for Golden State, has played an even bigger role for the Warriors in the playoffs since center DeMarcus Cousins suffered a quad injury in Game 2 against the Clippers.

Golden State leads the first-round Western Conference series 2-1. Game 4 is set for 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday in Los Angeles.
