Newly-signed Chief Tyrann Mathieu was honest in his assessment of wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s situation, calling it “very disappointing” and “unfortunate.”
The safety explained that he fully expected to play alongside Hill after signing a three-year, $42 million deal with Kansas City last month, but now that notion seems to have passed for Mathieu after disturbing purported audio of the NFL player and his fiancee, Crystal Espinal, came to light last week.
“I think it’s bad, man,” Mathieu told SB Nation Radio (via ProFootballTalk). “Obviously, it’s very disappointing. Obviously, I came to the Chiefs with hopes that I could watch him play football and watch him run back punts and catch long bombs and outrun everybody. You know, it’s a very unfortunate situation.
“I haven’t been his teammate much, just basically two or three weeks. So it’s not really fair for me to comment on his character. I don’t think I really know him. But like I said just with everything that’s out right now and obviously the audio, it’s very disappointing, not only from a teammate standpoint but I’m a father as well. It’s very disappointing.”
The Chiefs suspended Hill on Friday “for the foreseeable future” after they claimed to have learned of the audio clip’s existence at the same time the public did.
The audio was sent to Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV5 on Thursday, just a day after Johnson County, Kansas, prosecutors announced that Hill would not face charges of child abuse. The 11-minute video reveals Hill and Espinal discussing the police investigation and what they were telling authorities.
“We were deeply disturbed and concerned by what we heard. We have great concern for Crystal, we are greatly concerned for Tyreek, but our main concern is with the young child. … We are going to gather more information, we’re going to evaluate this information, and we will make the right decision regarding Tyreek Hill,” the Chiefs said in a statement Friday.
It was confirmed in March that Hill was being investigated by Overland Park, Kansas, police over two separate alleged incidents involving his son. Reports later added the boy was alleged to have suffered a broken arm in one of the incidents.
The couple temporarily lost custody of the child last week while the case was ongoing, and it has since been reopened after the audio was released.
