Cowboys tight end Rico Gathers has been suspended for one game by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, the team announced Friday.
Gathers, a sixth-round pick by Dallas in the 2016 NFL Draft, will miss the Cowboys’ season opener, Sept. 8 vs. the Giants.

The suspension will not affect Gathers’ status during the offseason or preseason, including exhibition games.
Gathers caught three passes last season for 45 yards. He appeared in 15 games and was used primarily as a blocker.
The Cowboys kept four tight ends on their roster last season, and with the return of 11-time Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten after a one-year retirement, Gathers’ roster spot could be in peril.
Gathers made the roster last year despite being arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia the day before the Cowboys named their 53-man roster. He was arrested Aug. 31 in a park in Frisco, Texas, in possession of 0.0780 ounces of marijuana.
