Former NFL running back Rod Smart, who entered football lore by wearing “He Hate Me” as the name on the back of his XFL jersey, has been found safe in South Carolina after being reported missing by family members, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
“Mr. Smart has been located and he is safe at this time. We appreciate everyone’s concern and assistance,” the sheriff’s office posted in an update on its Facebook page.
Earlier Tuesday, the sheriff’s office had posted a missing-person advisory for Smart, who had last been seen almost a week ago in Indian Land, South Carolina, just across the state line from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Smart, 42, played four seasons with the Panthers (2002-05) after one season with the Eagles (2001). He came to fame for his “He Hate Me” nameplate while playing for the Las Vegas Outlaws in the XFL’s one season in 2001.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office noted in its advisory that it was “unusual for him to be out of touch for this long. Mr. Smart’s family is worried about his safety and well-being.”
