Pat Shurmur debating if Eli Manning or Daniel Jones gives Giants best chance to win

Does Eli Manning have a future with Giants? 'We’ll see,' he says

It sounds like it’s going to be an open competition for the Giants’ starting quarterback job this year.

Coach Pat Shurmur made some telling remarks Tuesday regarding the team’s QB situation and the possibility of a competition between veteran Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones.

“We’re gonna play the very best player,” Shurmur said, via Newsday. “I know we’re dancing around the words here, but right now Eli is getting ready to have a great year and Daniel is getting ready to play. We’ll just see what happens.

“We feel good where Eli is, he’s our starting quarterback, and we’ve got a young player that we think is going to be an outstanding player getting himself ready to play.”

Shurmur also said he is constantly weighing between the two players and who gives the team the best chance to win.

New York has been very complimentary of Jones this season with the team’s offensive coordinator Mike Shula saying last month he believes the first-round pick will be ready quickly.

“I think he’d be ready to go (on Day 1), that’s my personal opinion,” Shula said, via the New York Post. “I do. I would say this — times have changed. In years past, you draft a guy, whenever you draft him, even if he was that early, those guys would traditionally not play until their second or third year. But really ever since probably six or seven years ago you started seeing more guys playing early. But I think he has that capability.”

This doesn’t mean Jones will be the team’s starter for the first game of the season, but the team apparently is confident Jones is NFL ready.

“He’s on track with the goal to be ready to play on Day 1,” Shurmur <a href="http://

” target=”_blank”>said Tuesday. “The QB stuff will be on the front burner for everybody. I get that. But he’s on track.”

He continued: “I’m not trying to be cryptic about it. It is what I said it is. Eli is getting ready to have an outstanding year and Daniel is getting ready to play. That’s really about it.”

And finally: “I don’t want to be cryptic. … The players who give our team the best chance to win play. Period. We’ve seen Eli do that for a very long time, so we’ll see what happens as we go down the road.”
