NHL free agency news: Devils sign Wayne Simmonds to 1-year deal

Wayne Simmonds is headed back to the Metropolitan Division.

The Devils on Monday announced they have signed the veteran winger to a one-year contract worth $5 million.

The signing comes after the Devils already made one of the biggest moves of the offseason so far late last month. The team acquired defenseman P.K. Subban from the Predators for defensemen Steven Santini and Jeremy Davies in addition to second-round picks in 2019 and 2020 on June 22.

Simmonds, who turns 31 in August, was initially selected by the Kings with the No. 61 pick of the 2007 draft but was later dealt to the Flyers. After eight years in Philadelphia, he was traded once again to Nashville in February.

He scored 17 goals and totaled 30 points in 79 regular-season games last season while splitting his time with the two teams. He was limited to just two playoff games with the Predators after suffering a lower-body injury against the Stars.
