Giants rookie QB Daniel Jones shines again; Pat Shurmur stiff-arms questions

NFL preseason 2019: 3 takeaways from the first big night

Giants rookie Daniel Jones is continuing to shine in the preseason, prompting more and more questions about who will be New York’s starting quarterback when the regular season opens.

Coach Pat Shurmur, however, isn’t willing to give in to the speculation. After Jones completed 9 of 11 passes for 141 yards Thursday to help the Giants to a 25-23 win over the Bengals, Shurmur stiff-armed questions around whether the rookie will have a chance to earn the starting job over veteran Eli Manning.

While Shurmur left the door open, he didn’t exactly answer the question.

“I’ve said it all along: Daniel, when it’s his time to play, he’s gonna be ready,” Shurmur said (per New York Daily News). “And we’re gonna continue to get him ready, and we’ve got a couple weeks left before we play Dallas.”

When Jones was asked if he thinks he’ll be ready for Week 1, he sidestepped the question, saying: “What I’m focused on right now is continuing to learn, continuing to take the right steps forward, and I think there’s a number of things I need to work on, there always will be.”

The Giants have faced criticism since April for selecting the former Duke quarterback with the sixth overall pick, but Shurmur went on to question Jones’ critics.

“You can ask me all you want about why I like him,” Shurmur said. “I think it’s time to start asking the people that didn’t like him what they think, quite frankly.

“He has a good feel. A couple of the deep balls he threw, when the defender’s in close proximity, giving the receiver a chance on the ball, those are two of the results on a couple of the deep balls. But he sees things well. He moved forward in his progress getting ready to play. And each week he does things. And, I mean, he’s into it.”

Jones is 25-for-30 for 369 yards and two touchdowns for a whopping 140.1 rating, fourth in the NFL through three preseason games.

The Giants open the regular season Sept. 8 against the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.
